How did patient 31 become a “Corona super-spreader” in South Korea?
“Before patient 31, our strategies to contain the virus were working. But after, countless people were infected by patient 31, it became very difficult to control.”
It’s a moment of millions of people in the world are yearning for life. It may be the last second of a patient who is struggling with his breath for survival. It’s not the pathetic condition in one country. It’s the reality of the whole world who is still suffering from COVID- 19.
Today, I will focus on a special incident in South Korea relating to the sudden outbreak of coronavirus. Yes, you may wonder about it. Hold your attention.
South Korea, an East Asian nation on the southern half of the Korean Peninsula also shares the jarring experiences related to the coronavirus. It is the country where we meet this patient 31. Who is patient 31? Why do people name that person by using a number as 31? Is there a reason for it? 🤔What about other patients in South Korea? Why does the patient 31 consider as special among them? you may be able to find answers after the discussion. We will go ahead.
The story behind the “patient 31”
It was 6th of February, a 61 year- old woman in South Korea faced a minor traffic accident in Daegu, the county’s fourth largest city. She experienced a headache due to that car collision and she was admitted to a hospital. The woman came home to collect her belongings on 9th of February, and after this, she attended the services at the Shincheonji church of Jesus in the south-eastern city of Daegu, with a large number of worshippers. This woman stepped out on at least four different occasions and all are public places. On 16th, once again she attended the church services and on next day the doctors asked her to get tested for COVID-19 virus. She refused it two times, but she agreed to get tested at last.
Can you imagine? What it was like?
It came back positive. It is the 31st confirmed case of COVID-19 in South Korea.
How does she become a “super spreader”?
It was a sudden spike in the coronavirus cases in South Korea. On Tuesday (18th of February), the country had only 31 cases including the patient 31.
According to Reuters, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said on Saturday, they had got a list of 9,300 people who had attended those two Shincheonji church services, around 1,200 had complained of the symptoms of the virus. Hundreds of serious cases could be linked to patient 31. That’s how she became “a super spreader”.
People are now calling her “crazy Ajumma” (aunty in Korean) because of her carelessness and thoughtlessness.
In the space of a couple of weeks, South Korea has dealt with a few cases of COVID-19 to hundreds due to the involvement of patience 31. Now, they are struggling to control the potential spread of the coronavirus using high-tech resources.
Daegu became the epicenter
Authorities called her as “super spreader” due to this sudden rising of the number of the patients. The educational institutes including the kindergarten schools in Daegu has temporally shut down. Especially, the universities in South Korea has announced to postpone the semesters. And also, they have taken some travel restrictions and a total 136 countries and territories have issued entry bans.
Deeply sorry for the sudden spike
Shincheonji said it as; “deeply sorry that because of our one of members, who thought of her condition as a cold because she had not traveled abroad, it led to many in our church being infected and thereby caused concern to the local community”.
It is true that, the corona-virus has affected more than public health. It affects for the downfall of the economy of certain countries. No, not only that. The small business, hotels, restaurants have closed their doors. It affects a lot to the whole world. We all are living in such a hard period. What is your responsibility? What can you learn from the patient 31? Can you tell me, what is your idea?
Do you feel angry towards her careless behavior? Is it a great fault? How do you feel it? Just, think. This is the moment that the world needs your help to rebuild all the nations.
It is true, you are one person among billions of people in the world.
You may feel like, “I am only one person, there are billions of people in the world”. NO, you should be active and vigilant. Act like “SALT”. Yes, what’s that? Its presence is not felt, but its ABSENCE makes everything tasteless.
Are you going t behave like “patient 31”
we all are humans. World is our family; it is so painful to live without our siblings just like that how are we going to live in this world without other people? Remember, they are our own people.
“Do what is great, though it is a small act”.
